Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana has been speaking about how he felt when he left Southampton, name-checking three former teammates who he believed would ensure they maintained their impressive form.
Despite a string of players leaving St Mary’s last summer, the Saints have actually improved and are still pushing hard for a Champions League place under manager Ronald Koeman.
Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers all left Southampton in the close-season; and in an interview with Liverpool’s official website, the midfielder has been reflecting on that time.
“I was worried a little bit at first,” Lallana said. “But they have Morgan Schneiderlin, Jose Fonte and Nathaniel Clyne.”
Lallana also said he believed his former club had recruited well in the summer, which appears to be something of an understatement when you consider the impact the likes of Graziano Pelle, Toby Alderweireld and Sadio Mane have had on the south coast team.
“The consistency that they’ve shown has not just surprised me, but the whole Premier League,” Lallana said.
Liverpool take on Southampton on Sunday and Lallana is likely to be the only one of the three players to move between the two clubs last summer to feature, with Lovren and Lambert failing to replicate their best form since moving to Anfield.
Whatever happens, it is sure to be an entertaining encounter, and those Southampton players who remained may well want to prove a point or two to those who moved on.
