Christian Benteke just needs a goal for 'floodgates' to open, says Sherwood

The Aston Villa striker has struggled for form recently.

Tim Sherwood got his Aston Villa managerial career in the Premier League under way today, with a performance that did not go to plan.

Villa were defeated by Stoke City 2-1 at Villa Park in a game in which they took the lead. Scott Sinclair scored the opener but in the end goals from Mame Biram Diouf and a penalty from Victor Moses in the 90th minute saw The Potters take the win at the death.

Once again the poor performance was perpetuated by a bleak turn out from Belgian striker Christian Benteke. He has been poor this season and has only scored three goals in 20 appearances this term.

But Sherwood believes that the player just needs to find the back of the net once, for the floodgates to open. He told the Aston Villa website:

"Christian knows he's a good player. He has a 1 in 2 strike rate - he is a prolific goalscorer.

"He is going through a barren spell at the moment. But when one goes in, the floodgates will open. I am sure of that...

"We need to feed him and he will score. He needs a goal to get himself up and running again. Once he does that, there will be no looking back."

Benteke scored 25 goals in his first season at Villa but only managed to notch 11 last term and this season has been a nightmare for the 24-year-old.

The only positive is that he is still young and we all know of his talent. All Sherwood needs to do is get the best out of him, like he did with Emmanuel Adebayor last term, and the goals will certainly start to flow.
