11 Take-ons; 3 key passes: Jordon Ibe exceptional in Liverpool victory over Besiktas

Jordon Ibe

Liverpool's Jordon Ibe impressed in his side's Europa League victory over Besiktas.

Mario Balotelli once again made the difference as a super sub for Liverpool in a 1-0 win over Besiktas, in the First Leg of their Europa League Round of 32 match, but it was the display of 19-year-old Jordon Ibe that caught the eye of many.

The Liverpool youngster gave a fantastic account of himself in his first ever European outing, tormenting the Turkish outfit down the left flank all game. It was entirely fitting that he ended up making the run that led to the awarding of the Reds' penalty, and Balotelli's consequent winner.

Playing in his new-found wing-back role, Ibe's contribution in an attacking capacity was tremendous. He proved a constant thorn in Besiktas' side, completing a competition-best 11 (of 13 attempted) take-ons and a further three key passes during his ninety-minute cameo.

While he failed to manage a shot at goal throughout his involvement, he proved influential in the deciding moment of the match. Just as he appeared to be tiring after 70 minutes, he still found the energy to turn the tie Liverpool's way, beating one man just past the half-way line, before bursting into the box and drawing a decisive foul.

It is fair to say his distribution left plenty to be desired, as did his defensive contribution; but few can complain considering the final scoreline and the clean sheet to match. Ibe completed just 70.6% of his attempts to pick out a teammate, while he found success in just a solitary tackle.

After impressing since his return to Anfield in January after a successful loan spell at Derby, reports suggesting a new contract may come as little surprise. A new five-year contract looks in the offing; an affirmation of the 19-year-old's rapid rise to first team prominence.
