A key game in the battle for the Champions League places in the Premier League. Liverpool will look to close within a point of their opponents while Southampton will hope to beat another one of their rivals for a place in next season's competition.
To be played on Sunday 22nd February 2015 at 16:15. Venue: St. Mary's Stadium, Southampton
Odds: Southampton 13/8, Draw 12/5, Liverpool 2/1
Southampton will be looking for an improved result from their last two outing's at St Mary's having lost to Swansea City and drawing to West Ham United. Sandwiched inbetween that was a late winning goal from Saido Mane at QPR, but a lack of goals recently could be a cause for concern for Ronald Koeman and his side.
But they have had an 11 day break in between games, while their opponents Liverpool have been in FA Cup and Europa League action. After a poor start to the season they have managed to keep themselves in contention for the Champions League places with a run of form that has seen them improve at the back and top the league's form table.
The game will have a lot of focus on the ex-Southampton contingent returning to St Mary's, with the most likely starter among the trio to be Adam Lallana - though his place in the starting XI is far from certain, and he could be among the substitutes with Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren.
As a result there is plenty of motivation for the Saints to try and get one over on Brendan Rodgers' men for their supporters. It will be interesting what the different conditions in the build-up to the game will have had on both sides with Liverpool's fixture schedule somewhat more congested than their counterparts.
Ryan Bertrand is still suspended for the home side, but several players are close to returning to fitness including Morgan Schneiderlin and Toby Alderweild and it remains to be seen if they will be part of the squad on Sunday.
Liverpool may freshen things up a little. Raheem Sterling came off the bench in the Europa League following an ankle injury so could start, while Lazar Markovic is available after being banned for the European game.
