Several players are going to be important for Liverpool to get a result at St Marys this weekend.

Liverpool have one of the most difficult games on the Premier League fixture list this weekend as they go to high flying Southampton, looking to close the gap on the Saints in the race for the top four.

If they’re going to get a result, several players need to step up and we’ve picked out five key men for Brendan Rodgers.

Emre Can

The German defender and midfielder has been one of the club’s best players over the last few weeks. He’ll be very important in terms of keeping Southampton’s attacking threats from having any say on the game.

Joe Allen

The Welsh midfielder will be an important player because of the quiet and hard-working job he does in midfield. He’ll hurry around, snapping at the heels of players and trying to stop the Saints from having time on the ball.

Jordan Henderson

The skipper will have a big role to play as leader. He needs to set the tone of Liverpool’s play in defence and attack while trying to keep everyone motivated if the match doesn’t start according to the game plan.

Raheem Sterling

One of the quickest players in the team and someone who will be very important on the counter attack. If the Saints leave pockets of space around the pitch, Liverpool have to try and get Sterling into it as quickly as possible.

Daniel Sturridge

Another 90 minutes under his belt against Besiktas so it will be a big ask for him to repeat that this weekend. However, Sturridge is the sort of player who only needs a couple of minutes on a pitch to turn a game and make the difference.
