Liverpool had a late penalty to thank for securing a win in their Europa League first leg match with Besiktas.
The penalty dispute between Mario Balotelli and Jordan Henderson stole the headlines, as did a standout performance from teenager Jordon Ibe.
What all of this distracted from however was a previously unconvincing performance, with Slaven Bilic's Besiktas side resolute and hard to break down.
Brendan Rodgers needed to change the team around, bringing on Balotelli and Dejan Lovren and Raheem Sterling as he switch his options around. Off came Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho - who looked tired making his 18th consecutive start - and Joe Allen.
Allen was particularly ineffective, failing to win a single tackle in midfield, and making only one interception. He had one shot, which was off target, and did not create a goalscoring opportunity either. He completed 81 per cent of his passes - relatively low by his standards, and all of this contributed to him being taken off after the hour mark.
Emre Can moved into midfield and immediately looked more composed than Allen.
With Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva out injured, and Dejan Lovren beginning to get more opportunities in defence again, Can in midfield ahead of Allen is looking like a more likely option.
A look at how Liverpool fans reacted to his display on Twitter suggests this will be a popular move...

How does Ian Ayre sleep at night knowing he paid 16 million for Joe Allen?! #LFC— Matthew Grassam (@MattyGrassam1) February 19, 2015

Genuinely only realised Joe Allen was 'playing' when he walked off the pitch after being subbed #doyouactuallyexist— freudian's lip (@freudians_lip) February 19, 2015
Still not keen on Joe Allen, he's too safe. Not seen anything of the qualities that BR mentioned, apart from easy passing & pressing.— Franny Scully (@TerraceUltra) February 19, 2015
Also thought Joe Allen played well while he was on the pitch. Moreno had another good game, Sakho our best defender tonight #LFC— Sam Smith (@samsmith05) February 19, 2015
