Koeman gives time-frame regarding Alderweireld future

Southampton's manager has been speaking about their on-loan centre-back.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has been speaking about the future of defender Toby Alderweireld in comments published by the club’s official Twitter account.

The Belgian international is on a season-long loan from Spanish side Atletico Madrid, but such has been his impact at St Mary’s that Saints fans will surely be desperate for the club to keep him longer if at all possible.

The 25-year-old has made 18 appearances for Southampton this season, helping the club maintain an outstanding defensive record and brilliantly fill the gap left by summer departure Dejan Lovren.

And now Koeman has gone into a little more detail as to when he may know what the future holds for one of his star players.

“We’d like to keep him in Southampton,” Koeman said. “We hope we’ll have an answer in one or two months.”

Given how Alderweireld has settled at the Saints it is no surprise his manager wants to keep him for the long term.

He also confirmed that the player would be missing for the weekend fixture against Liverpool but that he could return for the upcoming match against West Bromwich Albion.
