Jamie Carragher asks a title-winning question of Simon Mignolet

The Liverpool icon is still dwelling on 2014's failed title challenge...

During Liverpool's 1-0 Europa League win over Besiktas on Thursday night, Simon Mignolet made an excellent first-half stop against Demba Ba.

History almost repeated itself as Ba ran at Mignolet but the Belgian waited patiently before tipping the Besiktas forward's low strike wide of his left post.

And former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was impressed with the stop. Far from praising him for it, however, Carragher dwelled on a very specific moment in recent Liverpool history during which Mignolet failed to do the same.

Indeed, during last season's failed Premier League title challenge, the Reds conceded against Ba during a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Anfield. A defeat that proved pivotal in the title race.

Intriguingly, though, former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann immediately leapt to the goalkeeper's defence, suggesting that Mignolet could not have avoided rushing off his line against Chelsea as there was no defender tracking Ba on that occasion.

Clearly, it's a case of what could have been for Liverpool icon Carragher. In the present, Mignolet's save proved vital when it came to preserving a clean sheet and the Reds now travel to Turkey without having conceded any away goals.
