In pictures: Everton make the Swiss roll in Bern

Roberto Martinez pitchside for Everton

Everton took charge of their Europa League tie against Young Boys with a comprehensive 4-1 win in the first leg in Bern.

Everton may not be having the best of season's on the domestic front. They are out of both cup competitions and are just the five points above the relegation zone, but in Europe they are a different animal.

They may have been playing on a plastic pitch against Young Boys in Bern but they adapted to things brilliantly in a display that was full of attacking potency and confidence, something which has been severely lacking at home. Some have even joked the club need to invest in an artificial surface for Goodison Park next season.

They may have fallen behind in the game thanks to a very well taken goal from Guillaume Hoarau. Romelu Lukaku got two of his three goals by turning in crosses in the first half, and Seamus Coleman got on the scoresheet in similar circumstances as his strike but the Toffees' noses in front.

Lukaku rounded off his hat-trick with a cool finish in the second half and there was even time for a missed penalty from the home side.

Evertonians will hope this is a sign of things to come between now and the rest of the season. They are in command of this tie, and it probably gives Roberto Martinez licence to rotate his side a little for next week's second leg as he looks to carry this kind of form into the Premier League.
