Football journalist Guillem Balague is director of football at the Bedfordshire club.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague is probably used to passing on bigger news, but today he has let everyone know that a former Barcelona youngster and ex-Chelsea star is set to make his debut this weekend for ... Biggleswade United.
The player in question is former Chelsea midfielder and Spanish under-21 international Enrique 'Qique' De Lucas. He has signed on to play for the Bedfordshire side in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, the ninth tier of the football ladder, at the age of 36.
Of course there is a story here. Balague recently became the club's director of football. The Spanish journalist works on Sky TV's Spanish football coverage with De Lucas and it would appear that, through this medium, he agreed to bring him on board at the non-league side.
Quique De Lucas signed for Chelsea in 2002 from Espanyol on a four-year deal. During that time he scored just the one goal in the aggregate defeat against Viking of Norway in the UEFA Cup and featured sparingly in the Premiership.
The day before Roman Abramovich took over at Chelsea, De Lucas was let go by the club. But he went on to have a successful career in Spain with the likes of Alaves, Murcia, Cartagena and Celta Vigo before playing last season at Hercules in the Spanish second tier.
So Biggleswade certainly do not have some slouch in De Lucas, who also played for Paris Saint-Germain in his career.
The man himself has Tweeted his excitement at playing for the club v Dunstable tomorrow:
With the likes of Gaizka Mendieta, Quinton Fortune and Santiago Solari also frequent guests on Sky's La Liga coverage, who knows who Balague might bring to Second Meadow next.
