Ex-Tottenham man Luka Modric back in Real Madrid training, Clasico aim

The Croatia international has been on the sidelines for a couple of months through injury, but could be ready to feature in El Clasico next month.

Real Madrid star Luka Modric returned to full training yesterday, with the Croatian slowly getting back to fitness after a prolonged period on the sidelines.

The former Tottenham deep-lying playmaker tore his thigh muscle on international duty and has been on the Santiago Bernabeu treatment table for the last three months.

However, Modric has trained with Carlo Ancelotti’s men and could even be in line for a cameo appearance against Elche this weekend, AS reports.

Despite Madrid have comprehensive alternative options in the centre of the park, the diminutive schemer has emerged as a key player for the European champions.

The report states that the main objective for Modric is to be in prime condition before Madrid’s El Clasico clash with rivals Barcelona next month.

The game at Camp Nou will be played on Sunday, March 22, and will most likely play a considerable role in deciding who the Spanish champions will be this season.

In Modric’s absence, Ancelotti has deployed Isco in a deeper role, while the likes of Asier Illarramendi, Sami Khedira and new signing Lucas Silva are also in contention for a place in the boiler room alongside Toni Kroos.
