Everton were absolutely superb against Young Boys in the first leg of their Europa League game last night, with striker Romelu Lukaku scoring a hat-trick.
The performance from the Belgian was superb and although Young Boys didn’t put up much resistance, the goals will give Lukaku plenty of confidence and momentum looking ahead to the next few weeks.
He should have a spring in his step looking ahead to the Premier League this weekend and it’s important Martinez tries to get the most out of the striker and use his form to the side’s advantage.
Lukaku hasn’t been anywhere near his best in the Premier League, but this display showed exactly what he’s capable of in terms of his presence, his aerial ability, the intelligence of his positional play and the way he can pick out weaknesses in the opposition defence.
The performance from the team has given Martinez extra options because he can now rest players in the second leg, with the Toffees already holding a solid advantage.
He can hold players back for the domestic action unless he wants to play his strongest team next week and pile on the misery even further for the Swiss team.
The performance would have also sent out a message to the other teams in the competition that Everton mean business.
The top four looks a long way off in the Premier League, but if Martinez’s team can produce a solid display similar to this against sides that will show more resistance and quality, they could be an outside bet to win the tournament.
The winners get the chance to play in the Champions League next season, which is the ultimate incentive for any team to take the competition seriously.
Here’s what Everton fans on Twitter had to say about their player’s heroics.

Amazing performance from #EFC tonight. Lukaku with the perfect hattrick too! Chalk and cheese when compared to the league.— Garreth Roberts (@TheRealZombie77) February 19, 2015
Good performance going forward but really bad defending at times, Stones was stupid, Lukaku was brilliant could of had 5 or 6 #COYB— Liam (@EFCMad) February 19, 2015
