This season was supposed to be one of doom and gloom for Southampton, of course you can understand why.
They lost a long list of top players before the start of the season. Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert all left for Liverpool; Luke Shaw joined Manchester United and Calum Chambers moved to Arsenal. They even lost their manager. Mauricio Pochettino took over at Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, leaving Southampton up a certain creek without a paddle.
But they have performed exceptionally despite the long list of setbacks. currently they sit in fourth place in the league, just one point behind Manchester United and dreaming of qualification for Europe.
The main reason behind this form, has to be their new manager Ronald Koeman. The former Barcelona defender and Feyenoord coach has been sensational for the club. He used his knowledge to bring in players from the Dutch game such as Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle and Toby Alderweireld as well as Ryan Bertrand, Fraser Forster and Sadio Mane.
He has also embraced the youth policy at the club with the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Harrison Reed getting real chances to shine in the team this season.
Because of the performance he has bled from this once apparently drained stone he has picked up two Premier League manager of the month awards from Barclays this season. And he has happily shared a little pic of the pair on Twitter this afternoon, just to remind people how incredible a job he has done at Southampton this season.
