Former Arsenal midfielder was impressed with Leeds United's Lewis Cook.
Merson was recounting the club's 1-0 weekend win over Millwall, and couldn't help but take notice of Cook, a player he had not seen in action previously.
He said: "I thought there was a lad who played centre midfield called Cook, looked a player.
"He looked very young to me he looked about 18, 19, very comfortable on the ball, tries to make things happen, very impressed with him, very impressed."
The midfielder only recently turned 18, and has been a regular all season under head coach Neil Redfearn.
Merson was quick to point out the worry he has regarding Leeds United's young players, asking if they will be able to tie him down.
"The way they are, this lad Cook I really do feel he's a little good player, you have a look and think will someone come and get him?"
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported earlier this week that England youth international Cook is the subject of ongoing contract negotiations but no agreement has been reached over an extension to his current team which expires in 2016.
Cook has made a total of 29 appearances for Leeds this season, and while interest in him would be understandable, the club need to do all they can to dig in and keep hold of him.
