In pictures: Bamford's strike sends Middlesbrough top

Birmingham City FC - St. Andrews

Birmingham City's lead was cancelled out by the on-loan Chelsea forward, which took them to the top of the Championship.

Middlesbrough went to the top of the Championship last night thanks to a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City at St Andrews.

Given how tight the league is in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League, Boro managed to leapfrog both Derby County and Bournemouth to put themselves in pole position for a return to the top flight after a six-year absence.

They had to get the draw the hard way, after their goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopolous who was sent off for bringing down Clayton Donaldson.

Paul Caddis gave the home side a lead from the penalty spot going into half-time but Aitor Karanka's side fought back in the second half, culminating in a second-half equaliser from Patrick Bamford, who is currently on loan from Chelsea.

The draw may have ended Middlesbrough's winning run of six games while Birmingham boss Gary Rowett will be pleased that events off the field seemingly didn't distract his players from the matter of hand, with an issue with the club's controversial owners potentially having implications on the side on the field going forward.

His side have moved up to 12th in the table and are much improved when he took over at St Andrews, when it looked as if they could be scrapping further towards the foot of the table.
