Fiorentina's strengths explained: Who are the key players for Tottenham?

White Hart Lane 4

Fiorentina are strong in various areas based on Serie A performances this season, which Tottenham need to be aware of.

Fiorentina are one of the more difficult teams for Tottenham to face, as the club prepares to resume their Europa League adventure this evening.

It can be considered negative because of the quality in the Serie A team and it can be considered positive because of the high level Tottenham will need to play at to get a result.

So what are Fiorentina’s strengths and which Tottenham players will be important as a result?

Shooting

According to WhoScored, the Italian side have more shots from outside the box than any other team in Serie A.

That suggests that Tottenham need to be wary of giving the Italians space around their penalty area and players like Benji Stambouli or Mousa Dembele, if either plays, will be important in terms of closing down the space.

Possession and Passing

Fiorentina are ranked fourth best in Serie A for the average amount of possession they have had this season and for their passing accuracy.

There’s no important individual for Tottenham in terms of countering in these areas. The whole side has to press high up the pitch and get stuck into Fiorentina when the Italian side have possession in either half.

Action Zones

Fiorentina play more in the middle of the pitch than down the right or the left, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering they like to shoot from distance.

Spurs have to be competitive centrally before getting the ball wide where they can find and exploit space. Andros Townsend and Erik Lamela could both be important players, if it becomes obvious quickly that the Italian team are setting up to play narrow and congest central areas.

Offsides

Fiorentina are the sixth in terms of the average number of times they are caught offside per game.

That suggests they will sit deep at White Hart Lane before trying to get the forwards into space quickly.

Tottenham’s defenders need to be switched on to attacking players playing on their shoulder and it suggests that Christian Eriksen could be vital if the Italians sit deep and make it difficult for Spurs to break through.
