The Champions League is back, pitting Europe’s best club sides against one another.
With the first last-16 ties taking place on Tuesday night, fans were given their first glimpse of the latter stages of the biggest club competition in world football.
One of the biggest ties of the round is arguably Chelsea versus PSG; Premier League title hopefuls taking on France’s reigning champions. Arguably, it is also the battle of the world’s richest teams as Roman Abramovich’s billions come up against the Arab money currently at PSG.
Two of those players purchased with those funds are star strikers Diego Costa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The former was returning to the Chelsea team in midweek having been suspended for three matches domestically following his stamp on Liverpool’s Emre Can, while the mercurial Sweden forward continues to amaze and draw in the crowds.
Who came out on top in Tuesday’s fixture though? We decided to take a look and compare their performances.
Overall, it appears Ibrahimovic had the better performance on the night, if the stats are to be believed. The Swede had five scoring attacks compared to Costa’s one, while he also managed one assist compared to the Spaniard’s none.
Elsewhere, the PSG man managed 19 accurate passes compared to the Chelsea forward’s 13, while he also tried to get his team on the attack with greater regularity, with five forward passes compared to three. He also came out on top on the dribbling front, winning one contest compared to Costa’s none.
As always, though, stats can be misleading and arguably Costa will have been the happier forward on the night with his side taking a vital away goal back to Stamford Bridge for the second leg, and Ibrahimovic disappointed his side couldn’t secure a win at home.
