Spurs host the Italian side for the first leg of the European tie and Pochettino has suggested that Fiorentina have a more Spanish style of play despite being an Italian team.
“It’s going to be a fascinating tie. I’ve got a lot of respect for Italian football,” said Pochettino.
“I like the way [Fiorentina] play [under Vincenzo Montella]. His brand of football is very Spanish. They are a side you could enrol in the Primera Division and nobody would realise they are Italian.”
The comments from the boss seem to suggest that he expects the Serie A giants to try and dominate possession and play neat, pass and move football all over the pitch.
One way Tottenham can stop that from happening is by displaying one of the key themes of any Pochettino team; the high press.
If Harry Kane (if he starts) can harass the Fiorentina defenders from the very top of the team and put them under pressure, they could rush things and make the wrong decisions which put their teams under pressure.
The full-backs also need to push up the pitch and press their opposite numbers to prevent the Italian team from being able to move their defensive line high up the pitch.
Spurs have had very recent success against teams who like to dominate possession in Chelsea and Arsenal so that style of play from Fiorentina tomorrow night won’t faze them.
