Jason Pearce's Wigan debut turned out to be a game worth waiting for as he hit the winner away to Reading to give them a spark in their latest relegation battle.
The Latics became notorious during their time in the Premier League for their great escapes, before eventually succumbing to the drop in 2013, and are currently in the midst of a fight to stay in the Championship.
They went into the game against Reading nine points from safety, but Pearce's winner breathes new confidence into their attempts to elude the drop.
So pleased to make my debut tonight- and get a massive win. Lads were magnificent! Onwards and upwards.!! WAFC!!!!— Jason Pearce (@jpearce05) February 17, 2015
Pearce left Leeds United in late January where he had been the club captain, but fell out of favour under Neil Redfearn's management. He had been overtaken in the pecking order by Liam Cooper, Giuseppe Bellusci, and new loanee Sol Bamba.
Despite signing last month Pearce had to wait for his debut, and it was an ideal one, netting the winner in the first half. As well as scoring, Pearce made six clearances and two interceptions, and blocking one goalbound effort.
He managed to avoid the unfortunate fate of former Leeds teammates Stephen Warnock and Matt Smith, who both this season marked their moves away from the club with red cards on their first starts.
Here's a look at how Wigan and Leeds fans reacted to Pearce's debut goal...
