Why Celtic's ideal summer signing could be available on a free

Celtic should make a move to sign Fulham midfielder Bryan Ruiz.

Celtic should make a move to sign Fulham's Bryan Ruiz on a free transfer this summer.

Ruiz's contract with the Championship side is expiring and it seems likely that he will depart Craven Cottage in the near future, with Fulham's chances of making it into the Premier League looking very slim.

His exit from Fulham is likely to attract a number of suitors, but Celtic should ensure that they are at the front of the queue as he is the sort of player that could advance their game.

Ruiz is unquestionably a match-winner and he is one of the most elegant players to watch in European football.

Capable of playing out wide or through the middle, the attacking midfielder possesses marvellous technical ability and his creativity would be hugely important to the Bhoys.

Ruiz has claimed four goals and three assists in 18 appearances for Fulham this campaign, but it's his distribution that has been the most impressive facet of his game.

The Costa Rica international has completed over 84% of his passes and has created more than one chance per game for his teammates.

With Celtic's dominance of Scottish football so obvious, most teams simply choose to sit back and try to stifle their build-up play, and Ruiz's artistry could be crucial in this regard.

The 29-year-old has the ability to unlock defences in an instant and there would be few more naturally talented players in the whole of Scotland if the Bhoys were able to land him.

Although his age is a drawback and there would be little re-sale value in the transfer, the fact he is available on a free makes the chance of securing his signature too attractive an opportunity to turn down and Celtic should do everything in their power to ensure they sign him at the end of the season.
