Tottenham cult hero Van der Vaart is ideal free transfer signing for Sherwood's Aston Villa

Van Der Vaart

Should Aston Villa consider a move for former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart in the summer?

Tim Sherwood was unveiled as Aston Villa boss on Monday, tasked with the immediate job of ensuring they avoid relegation.

Beyond that he will hope to have the chance to add to his squad in a way he was not permitted to at Tottenham, always on a short leash with the board not seeing him as a long term answer.

A few of the Spurs players he once worked with like Emmanuel Adebayor or Andros Townsend are possible additions come the summer, but there is a high profile star who left before he became manager that could be a shrewd addition in the summer.

That would be Rafael van der Vaart, 32, who is available on a free transfer at the end of the season with his Hamburg contract set to expire.

With the German side struggling, it appears both club and player are willing for an amicable parting of ways to take place this summer.

For a side lacking creativity and struggling for goals like Aston Villa, Van der Vaart could be just the answer in a league where he has a proven track record.

In the 2011/12 season, Van der Vaart scored once every three games, and his passing was a major asset to the side, ensuring he either netted or created a goal in more than half of the matches he played.

Ajax boss Frank de Boer was quoted by German channel Sport1 this week stating he'd love to have him back at the club, so the Dutchman won't be struggling for offers.

At Villa, should he be brought in he would be an interesting test for boss Tim Sherwood, to see if he can get the best out of him for a season or two, and add a spark to the attack.

Playing behind striker Christian Benteke, Van der Vaart could thrive and get the best out of the Belgian, who has struggled for form and quality service this season.

If not the former Spurs man then Villa will need to find a younger alternative, but a player of his quality and creative nous is needed to liven up their frontline. On a free transfer, they could do far worse...
