Report: Ex-Arsenal man Thomas Vermaelen making recovery at Barcelona

Vermaelen Captain

The Belgium international has not yet featured for the Spanish club due to injuries, but is on the recovery path.

Barcelona fans are yet to catch a glimpse of summer signing Thomas Vermaelen this season, who has struggled with injury this term and not featured in a competitive fixture for the Catalan outfit.

The Belgian defender left Arsenal after five years at the Emirates Stadium, where he played over 100 Premier League games for the Gunners.

However, Mundo Deportivo has stated that Barcelona’s £15 million summer signing is back on the recovery path and could well feature for the Blaugrana before the end of the season.

Vermaelen had a thigh operation back in December and was widely expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

The Spanish newspaper has confirmed that the Belgian is working closely with team physiotherapist Xavi Linde, building up his fitness with running drills.

The centre-half is said to be making better progress than firstly expected and as such could well be available for Barcelona before next term.

Arsenal have since bought Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal as Vermaelen’s replacement, as earlier in the campaign Arsene Wenger’s men were caught short at times in the heart of their defence.
