Oviedo confirms Everton have been working hard to remove weakness from performances

Everton defender Bryan Oviedo feels the hard work the club has been doing defensively has had an impact on recent results.

Everton star Bryan Oviedo has told the Liverpool Echo he feels a strong defensive mentality will be important for the club over the rest of the season.

Only Newcastle United have conceded more goals than the Toffees in the Premier League’s top 16 as things stand, but it’s an area Oviedo feels could benefit the club over the coming weeks and months.

“I think we have changed our mentality. In the last few games, we have played very well, much better,” said Oviedo.

“We work very hard with the staff on the defensive aspect, but we cannot relax, we have to keep working and trying to be better.”

Everton have conceded just one goal in their last four games which shows the back four is tightening up.

That goal came against Chelsea in the club’s last game when the Toffees were down to ten men and they very nearly held out for an important point.

Roberto Martinez deserves credit for keeping the side well motivated and mentally strong through a difficult period when the back four was being heavily criticised.

He has been helped by the return of key players to the defence such as John Stones, who have added extra quality in defensive positions and provided the manager with different options.

If Everton can maintain their recent run of form in terms of the defence, they should do well to push for the top eight in the Premier League, as well as mounting a strong challenge in the Europa League, which resumes this week.
