What does Sherwood's appointment mean for Tottenham's reported interest in Delph?

Former boss Tim Sherwood could make or break a possible summer transfer for Tottenham Hotspur.

Tim Sherwood’s appointment at Aston Villa will have delighted some Tottenham fans happy to see him back in the game.

However, he will now have a big say on the future of a player who has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane; Fabian Delph.

Delph recently signed a new contract with the Midlands club, but former Villa forward Stan Collymore suggested that it wouldn’t be much in terms of deterring sides from going after him.

So what might Sherwood being at the club mean for Tottenham’s reported interest?

On the one hand, it could work well for them.

Sherwood’s experience as Tottenham manager means he has a good idea over the setup of the club and how well suited the North Londoners are for developing younger players.

On the other more likely hand, it could work against them.

Sherwood worked well with a number of key young players at Tottenham, suggesting via the Daily Telegraph that Harry Kane’s progression and development was down to him.

Sherwood can take it upon himself to try and make Delph one of the best in his position in the Premier League.

That’s not something that he can do in a few months and is a task that will take the Villa boss a long time to achieve.

It’s common sense from Sherwood’s point of view but he needs to be backed as he’s unlikely to push Delph towards the exit door.

If Tottenham dangle a big bid in front of Villa and they are still a Premier League club looking ahead to next year, Randy Lerner or any other key official needs to have the guts to say thanks, but no thanks.

If Sherwood keeps Villa up, Delph could become his main man next season and beyond.
