Szczesny Training

Wojciech Szczesny was in action for Arsenal against Middlesbrough.

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is the club's number one goalkeeper but shirt assignment only.

The Pole has been moved aside by Arsene Wenger in favour of summer signing David Ospina, who is yet to put a foot - or hand - wrong since coming into the side.

Szczesny made his second appearance at the weekend since losing his place, being selected for FA Cup games only by manager Arsene Wenger.

Prior to the home win over Middlesbrough, Szczesny was photographed in the Gunners' dressing room, pointing smugly at his number one shirt hanging up.

While Wenger has trust in Ospina right now, it's been clear across Szczesny's career he does not lack confidence, and is unlikely to be willing to let his stewardship of the Arsenal goal go up in smoke, without a fight.

The Mirror reported in January that he was axed by Arsene Wenger after he was caught after the game with Southampton with a cigarette, but losing his place had just as much to do with his error-strewn game against the Saints.

Against Middlesbrough he kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win, but it was the first time he had done so since November 1, a 3-0 win over Burnley.

That's a spell which has 10 games in between in which he conceded, so if he needed a confidence boost, which is doubtful given his cocky persona, Szczesny will have got it with the FA Cup win.
