Manchester United latest: Early team news and reason for increased security

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United take on Preston North End in the fifth round of the FA Cup later today, with Louis van Gaal seeking his first piece of silverware since joining the club.

Arsenal and Liverpool have already made it through to the quarter-finals and, along with United, they will be regarded as the favourites for the competition following a year of upsets that could continue at Deepdale.

In early team news, the BBC reports that Michael Carrick remains on the side-lines while United also have doubts regarding defender Phil Jones and midfielder Daley Blind after the duo were substituted early on in the victory against Burnley.

Preston cannot call on Sam Johnstone against his parent club while Jermaine Beckford and Daniel Johnson are both unavailable.

In other news, the Manchester Evening News reports that security will be increased for United’s match as Sir Alex Ferguson will travel with the club.

The report claims the League One side are fearful some Preston fans may try to approach Ferguson, who recalled some of the club’s loan players following his son Darren’s dismissal back in 2010.

Lancashire police are said to have rated tonight’s match as a Class C fixture.
