The Hammers were well beaten by the Baggies, who ran out 4-0 winners and Downing isn’t pleased with various aspects of West Ham’s performance.
“To sum it up, we missed chances, didn't pass the ball great and didn't defend the goals well so we didn't deserve anything,” said Downing.
“We just didn't get out of the blocks and credit to West Brom, they got through so I wish them luck.”
Any team that frequently misses chances leaves their defence under pressure.
Had West Ham taken one or two of their chances in the game against the Baggies, it would have taken the edge off of the defence a little bit and would have given the side a bit of a lift.
West Ham can’t afford to be as wasteful in possession this weekend against Tottenham, who are a side that like to control and dominate possession.
If West Ham can protect the ball this weekend, they have every chance of getting a more positive result than was the case against West Brom.
The defence also has to dig in a little more. It’s easy to say the attack need to take their chances, but a defence still has to keep a clean sheet and keep their team in the game.
If West Ham don’t improve this weekend, Tottenham have the players and skill to take full advantage.
