West Ham United star Stewart Downing has explained why he feels the game against Tottenham is important.

Stewart Downing has told the West Ham United website why the club’s game against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend is massive for the club.

Downing has remained positive after the heavy defeat against West Brom over the weekend in the FA Cup, stressing that the club are still in the hunt for a European place.

Spurs are ahead of the Hammers in the Premier League table, but Downing feels the prospect of European football for next season makes the game huge for the Hammers.

“We're still in the hunt for the European places, so Tottenham is a massive game,” said Downing.

“If we end up finishing tenth or eleventh, people won't look at the start of the season as being good.”

This weekend is also a good chance for West Ham to get some revenge over Tottenham after Spurs defeated the Hammers on the opening day of the season.

It won’t be an easy game for the Hammers because Tottenham have the home advantage.

White Hart Lane is never an easy place to visit for any travelling team and Tottenham’s fans will create a difficult atmosphere considering the rivalry between the two clubs.

However, what West Ham do have in their favour is that this game comes so soon after Tottenham’s Europa League clash against Fiorentina.

If there’s any element of fatigue from Tottenham, West Ham have what it takes to take advantage of that and press for a positive result.

It’s a massive game and a massive chance for West Ham to do well.
