Philipp Wollscheid’s early matches in a Stoke City shirt suggested the Potters had signed another quality defender, and yet the German international’s showing against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday painted a very different picture of the 25-year-old.
The loanee from Bayer Leverkusen has played five Premier League matches since his January switch, and he appeared to be settling in well. But back-to-back 4-1 defeats – first to Manchester City and now to Blackburn – have raised plenty of questions over the centre-back’s ability to cut it in England.
The FA Cup has a tendency to give quality players days they would much rather forget, so it may be a case of reserving judgement for a while longer. But the Stoke faithful may not have much patience after seeing their side humbled twice in a week.
After Saturday’s clash, we took to Twitter to see what Stoke fans thought of Wollscheid’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
I've seen milk turn quicker than Philipp Wollscheid! #slug— Dominic Groom (@DominicGroom) February 14, 2015
Embarrassing, shamful, woeful that's how bad it was today! Defence is a sham, once they saw how slow wollscheid was that was it. Fuming!!!— Dave Jones (@Bonner_DJ) February 14, 2015
@Homzy I'm not keen on Wollscheid, makes me very nervous, I told he's both footed...more like neither to me, bring back Wilson!!— Trystan Blight (@tb007) February 14, 2015
Wollscheid in the space of 5 days has gone from the 2nd coming of Beckenbauer to Sonko. I do love balance and reason.— bayernoatcake (@bayernoatcake1) February 15, 2015
'De we need Shawcross now we have Muniesa and Wollscheid?' I remember lots of tweets like this a few games ago. Get. Our. Captain. Back.— Ben Hares (@tweetingbez) February 15, 2015
