Former Arsenal and Spurs transfer target wins La Liga Player of the Month

Antoine Griezmann

Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann has been lighting up La Liga with a number of fine performances.

Former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Antoine Griezmann has proved over the last month just what the Premier League rivals missed out on.

The French international was named La Liga’s Player of the Month following his stunning form for Atletico Madrid, Spanish publication AS report.

In three La Liga starts for Los Colchoneros throughout January, the former Real Sociedad ace contributed five goals and one assist – winning the man of the match award on one occasion.

His positive January and further contribution to Atleti’s 4-0 win over arch-rivals Real Madrid last week took Griezmann’s season total to 12 goals in 15 starts – a stunning feat for a wide player.

Diego Simeone’s side have certainly improved from last season – as shown by their astonishing four wins in six games against Madrid this season – and much has to do with the contribution of Griezmann.

However, their fortunes so far this campaign may have been somewhat different had the 23-year-old become part of a successful bid from North London.

According to the player himself in an interview with Goal last October, Griezmann could have found himself playing with the Gunners this season after revealing their summer intentions.

Arsene Wenger may have earmarked his compatriot as the ideal marksman to lead his side last summer, yet the Gunners instead opted for Chilean international Alexis Sanchez.

Spurs, on the other hand, were also heavily linked, with the Telegraph publishing in July that boss Mauricio Pochettino had touted him as a possible Gareth Bale replacement.

Such a deal to take Griezmann to North London, however, subsequently never materialised and it appears Premier League viewers worldwide will take regret at another world star hitting the heights elsewhere.
