Tim Sherwood was announced as the new manager of Aston Villa on Saturday, and the former Tottenham Hotspur boss has to make do with his current playing squad for the remainder of the season.
With Villa in the bottom three and struggling for goals, let alone wins, it could be a tough few months for Sherwood. But there is no doubt the 46-year-old has the player’s at his disposal to help the club to safety before building in the summer and beyond.
Sherwood has very close ties to Tottenham, and below we consider three players currently on Spurs’ books who their ex-manager could realistically target in the next transfer window.
The most obvious name on this list, Tottenham forward Emmanuel Adebayor shone during Sherwood’s time in charge of the club.
Coming in from the cold, the Togo international scored 11 league goals in 21 appearances following the departure of Andre Villas-Boas.
Such is his talent that he could still do a very good job for Villa; especially when you consider their struggles in front of goal this season and the impact Sherwood has already had on the 30-year-old.
Tottenham have a lot of right-backs, and 22-year-old Ryan Fredericks is likely to find game-time hard to come by if he remains in North London next season.
His flexibility – he can also play on the right wing – means he could be a very canny signing for Villa and one who would be relatively cheap if Spurs were willing to do business.
Currently on loan at Middlesbrough, Fredericks is a promising player who Sherwood will know very well.
With Ron Vlaar expected to move on this summer, Villa are likely to require some new defenders and Milos Veljkovic could be the perfect addition.
Like Fredericks, he is a versatile player who can also operate in defensive midfield and his talent is such that he could be a huge hit at Villa Park.
His season was recently brought to a disappointing end after he suffered a dislocated shoulder but if Sherwood can get him playing like some of the other young players previously under his tutelage – most notably Nabil Bentaleb – he could be an excellent addition to his new squad.
