The Liverpool defender has been out of the side recently, but the FA Cup could provide a perfect place to return.
Liverpool’s upcoming FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace could be the perfect time to reintroduce Dejan Lovren into the side.
The £20m summer signing from Southampton has so far failed to impress on Merseyside, with a number of poor performances leading to his recent exclusion from the side.
Can has impressed and became a firm fan favourite in the position, but with Steven Gerrard now out injured, it could be the perfect opportunity to move him back into his favoured defensive midfield position and give Lovren a run in the side once again.
In fact, statistics comparing Lovren and Can suggest that the Croatian is rather unfortunate to be missing out, as he is way ahead of the German in a number of key areas.
For example, he has registered more tackles than Can, while he also beats him in the effective clearance category as well as the effective headed clearance and duel won categories.
In fact, it could be argued that Can is a better passer than Lovren, and that is why he has been put in alongside Mahmadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel. Well, as the stats show, Lovren is actually better with his accurate pass rate as well, registering 780 compared to Can’s 447.
However, statistics can be misleading and given Liverpool’s recent run of form, Can’s inclusion in the squad is rightly justified, regardless of what the numbers say. The FA Cup though, could prove the perfect stage to give Lovren a second chance, with the stats suggesting he may have been a better signing than first thought.
