The pair have picked up knocks in recent games and will be unavailable to feature against Alan Pardew’s men, with Brendan Rodgers having to shuffle his pack as a result.
Jordan Henderson looks set to feature in the centre of the park, possibly with Joe Allen alongside him.
The England international has stressed that the duo's absence was a blow for the Anfield club, but that he would try to step up to the plate as a result.
"To lose Lucas first was a big blow because he has been outstanding for us since he came into the team as that defensive, holding midfielder," ITV quote Henderson as saying.
"Obviously Stevie (Gerrard) is a big loss, even though it is not as long (as Lucas), but there are some big games coming up that he might not be involved in.
"But it is another chance for people to come in and show what they are made of and slot straight into the team. Hopefully someone can do that.
"Maybe I need to take more responsibility with those two players gone."
With Gerrard leaving the Merseyside outfit after 18 years with the club at end of the season, Henderson has been touted as a possible new captain for Rodgers’ men.
One way or another, the former Sunderland man will have a job on his hands to provide the drive, determination and influence on proceedings that Gerrard has offered during a distinguished career at Liverpool.
