Report: Arsenal's Jack Wilshere in contention to return this weekend

Jack Wilshere is in contention to return for Arsenal this weekend.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is in contention to return to action this weekend, according to The Times.

The 23-year-old has not played since injuring his ankle against Manchester United in November, but has recently returned to first team training.

The Gunners host Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fifth round this weekend, aiming to continue their defence of the trophy.

The Times report: "Jack Wilshere, the midfielder, may return to the squad for the first time in three months after recovering from an ankle injury."

What should fans expect?

This is a positive sign in terms of the midfielder's recovery, even that reports are emerging discussing his impending return.

Being described as a possible returnee to the squad however is a very different proposition as opposed to the team, and a place on the bench is likely the best the England international could hope for.

For Wilshere to even be involved as an unused substitute would be a positive step. PremierInjuries.com tout Wilshere's return as being a week further on, when they travel to Crystal Palace. Arsene Wenger is expected to confirm or deny rumours of Wilshere's involvement this weekend at his Friday morning press conference.

Timing

Wilshere's return, if he does make his way back in this weekend, could not be better timed. Arsenal lost Aaron Ramsey to a hamstring injury this week, and Wilshere being available would compensate for this and boost their options in midfield.

This is a crucial month for Arsenal with a build towards the Champions League clashes against Monaco, and Wilshere appears to be on schedule.

Other injury news

The same report discusses Aaron Ramsey's hamstring injury, stating that it could be worse that the initial month he was yesterday described as being out for. The Times state he could miss six weeks of action, which would mean both legs of the Champions League clashes.

Alexis Sanchez is likely to be available pending fitness tests for Arsenal this weekend, but The Times reports that Arsene Wenger may decide to rest the Chilean either from the squad entirely or leaving him on the bench.
