Michael Owen has predicted in his Betvictor.com column that Bradford City can stage an upset against Sunderland this weekend.
League One outfit Bradford will host the Black Cats at the Valley Parade in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
Premier League club Sunderland will be favourites heading into the contest, but former Manchester United and Liverpool star Owen has refused to rule out the Bantams’ chances of a win.
“Valley Parade is not the greatest playing surface in the world and I expect to see a tight, tense affair on a difficult pitch with few chances,” the 35-year-old ex-England international striker wrote on Betvictor.com.
“The Bantams were quite magnificent against Chelsea in the previous round and have every chance of pulling off another upset although the Black Cats will be up for the fight.”
Could Michael Owen’s prediction come true?
Sunderland are struggling for survival in the Premier League and will head into Sunday’s tie on the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Queens Park Rangers.
Gus Poyet’s side were expected to pick up all three points from that game on Tuesday, and one suspects that they will be determined to return to winning ways.
The Black Cats have shown signs of improvements in recent weeks, but against Bradford they will face a team who will be keen on making it through to the sixth round of the FA Cup.
Phil Parkinson’s side will head into the tie on the back of a 2-1 home win against MK Dons which saw them move up to eighth in the League One table, just a point behind sixth-placed Sheffield United.
Bradford are having a good season, and it should not come as a surprise if they defeat Sunderland on Sunday.
After all, it was not so long ago that Bradford stunned Chelsea 4-2 at Stamford Bridge…
