Former Liverpool star Steve Nicol says Harry Kane needs to be consistent over an extended period of time.
Liverpool legend Steve Nichol told Extra Time for talkSPORT that Harry Kane has to play consistently over an extended period to be considered as good as Daniel Sturridge.
The former defender was pressed on whether the Tottenham Hotspur star was as good after he bagged his 23rd goal of the season in the game at Anfield earlier this week.
“You’re joking aren’t you? – He’s had a good six months but Sturridge has been consistent for the last 18 months,” said Nicol.
Kane is arguably the Premier League’s best striker right now, despite Sturridge’s return to the Liverpool side.
It’s a fair point because Sturridge has been consistent since he joined Liverpool, as Brendan Rodgers has turned him into a better player.
Kane is enjoying the season of his life, but his main challenge is going to be staying effective once sides start finding new tactical systems, which can keep him quiet.
He’s got all of the attributes necessary to cope against physical tactics, high defensive lines and sides that try to man mark him out of a game.
It will also be interesting to see if Kane can perform in an England shirt and better the impact that Sturridge has had when he’s worn the three lions.
If his form gets him an England call-up and if he performs at senior level for the national side. He could be in a better position when this question is re-asked in the future.
