Lionel Messi’s standards too high to reach - Mario Gotze

The Bayern Munich attacker has praised the Argentinian and stated that the four-times Ballon d’Or winner is the best in the business.

Lionel Messi has set the bar so high that no other player will be able to consistently reach it, Mario Gotze has stated.

The four-times Ballon d’Or winner has started 2015 in scintillating form, leading Barcelona to a run of wins that threatens to see them to claim silverware both domestically and on the continent this season.

With the Argentina international getting older alongside current Ballon d’Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo, Gotze is expected to be included in the next wave of players to win the individual accolade.

Despite the Bayern Munich man scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final for Germany in the summer, Gotze has stated that he is unable to maintain the level of performances consistently set by Messi.

"He's achieved so many great things and set the bar so high that practically nobody is ever going to reach it,” the Bundesliga star told Sport Bild.

"Some days you can get close to that level, but doing it all the time is difficult.”

Messi and Gotze were on opposing sides in the World Cup final but despite the South American ending up on the losing side, he still scooped the player of the tournament award.

The Barcelona attacker is clearly motivated to fire his team to silverware this season and has been the undoubted star of world football since the turn of the year.
