His Tottenham career began far from ideally, however, when Kyle Naughton's sending off forced him to revert to right-back. He scored a late winner from that position on his debut but later dwindled in the unfamiliar role.
In recent weeks, though, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has deployed the 21-year-old at centre-back, where Dier has very much impressed in his natural position.
And, when asked if Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma is the best young defender in the Premier League, Keown replied during a 'Tackle Keown' session on the Daily Mail website:
"If I had to pick one, I’d go for Dier. The other evening when Tottenham played Liverpool, Dier faced a player in Daniel Sturridge who has got real pace and will embarrass defenders.
"Dier made one or two elementary mistakes but, when it mattered most, when Sturridge was through on goal, he got in a couple of blocks and had the pace to match him or hurried Sturridge so he missed.
"Dier’s got a good combination of power, strength, and he can play too."
Tottenham are not in action this weekend after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester City, which should give Pochettino useful time to prepare for the upcoming month's Premier League, Europa League and Capital One Cup action.
Spurs' last league game saw them lose 3-2 at Liverpool earlier this week.
