Pablo Zabaleta says his side need their star striker to be hitting the back of the net if they are to win the title again.
Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta says his side need Sergio Aguero back to his best, according to the Premier League’s official website.
The Argentine was in fine form with 14 league goals before a knee injury in December curtailed that impressive record.
That injury saw him spend five weeks on the treatment table, and his return has seen him fail to rediscover the hot goalscoring touch that was with him before his absence.
While Aguero has struggled so has his team, with them failing to win their last five matches in all competitions and allowing Chelsea to open up a seven-point gap at the top of the Premier League table. Now, Zabaleta says they need Aguero to rediscover his goal scoring touch if they are to defend their title.
“We need Sergio to come back to his best like he was in November, December,” said Zabaleta.
“He was doing everything for the team - scoring goals, working hard for the team,” Zabaleta said.
"But after being injured for a long time for some players it is difficult to come back to his best, in terms of fitness.”
Aguero has proved a prolific forward for City since joining from Atletico Madrid, even scoring the winning goal that led them to their first Premier League title three seasons ago.
Despite his teammate’s struggles in front of goal since his return, the Argentina defender is backing his compatriot to get back to his best sooner or later, and that it is all just a matter of confidence when it comes to strikers.
"I am sure Sergio will come back to his best,” added Zabaleta.
“It is about confidence as well. Scoring goals is the best thing for them [strikers] and I am sure as soon as Sergio scores one goal then he will again be one of the best strikers in the league."
