Queens Park Rangers may not have a permanent manager, but they continue to fight on the pitch to avoid being dragged down into the Championship for next season.
There’s plenty happening away from the pitch, with the Independent reporting that former favourite to take over at Loftus Road, Tim Sherwood, has ruled himself out of contention for the job.
That suggests that the caretaker coaches in charge of the side will have control over the team for a little while longer, which will delight Matt Phillips who returned to the line-up against Sunderland.
Phillips didn’t get himself on the score sheet during the 2-0 win but he worked hard in all areas to make QPR a stronger side for the Black Cats to break down over 90 minutes.
He provided a great cross for Leroy Fer to score the opening goal of the game before Bobby Zamora added a second to increase the London team’s advantage.
QPR are now out of the bottom three and need to make the most of the momentum they have created for themselves.
The side doesn’t have a fixture this weekend because of the FA Cup, but takes on Hull City in a huge game when the Premier League action returns.
It will be interesting to see whether he’s now given the chance to retain his place in the side moving forward, as he’ll be eager to justify his first team place for when a new manager signs on the dotted line.
Here’s what QPR fans on Twitter had to say about Phillips’ performance last night.
Redknapp would have let Matt Phillips go on deadline day. Tonight he's set up both goals with QPR on track for first away win of the season.— Oliver Todd (@oliver_todd) February 10, 2015
