Former Arsenal player Ray Parlour has suggested two midfielders are vital for Everton against Chelsea.
Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT that he feels Muhamed Besic and Gareth Barry will be key for Everton against Chelsea.
“I think Besic and Barry are going to be key with the way Chelsea’s midfield plays,” said Parlour.
Barry injects experience into the Everton midfield, while Besic is a very busy player who is capable of snapping at the heels of opposition players and putting them under pressure.
Barry also offers a link between defence and midfield, which is important in terms of getting attacks moving quickly.
There is theory in Roberto Martinez keeping them together in the same team, because central midfield is arguably the strongest part of Chelsea’s side.
Everton have to find a way to compete in the middle and flooding that area could force Chelsea’s attacking play into wide areas where it’s arguably easier to contain.
Everton can’t allow Chelsea to dominate possession, because there is enough creativity in their team to give the Toffees plenty of problems over the course of 90 minutes.
That means sensible tackling from Besic and Barry and no rash decisions, which could create opportunities for Chelsea to apply extra pressure to the defence.
Martinez will be looking for his team to show a little bit more than they produced in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool last weekend and a result this evening could do their confidence a world of good.
