Ward-Prowse: What makes Southampton a 'top' team

James Ward-Prowse feels Southampton have the battling qualities of a top side.

Southampton star James Ward-Prowse has told the Daily Echo what he feels is the most encouraging sign for the side in the race for a top four place.

The Saints continue to defend their position just below Chelsea and Manchester City as they go after the very realistic possibility of Champions League football for next season.

“It’s a good sign that we can win games and not play well, and I think that’s a trait of a top team in the league, is they can go to places and battle and fight and not get anywhere, but then still produce the magic,” he said.

Southampton’s battling qualities were on full display when they secured a win away at Manchester United recently.

That’s a game they were expected to lose heading into the match but they defended superbly and took a chance to ensure they left with all three points.

Things are going to get really tense over the remaining weeks of the season as the stakes get higher.

Sides are going to really get at Southampton over the next few games, whether they are playing a rival for a top four place or a side trying to scrap and improve their position near the bottom of the table.

If they get results when they’re not playing well, they’ll chip away improving their position showing qualities which will be equally important next season as well as in Europe should they qualify for a place.
