Villarreal have included Arsenal star Joel Campbell in their Europa League squad for the competition’s latter stages, the official UEFA website confirm.
The 22-year-old joined the Yellow Submarines on loan until the end of the season during the January transfer window as part of a deal which saw the Gunners acquire Gabriel Paulista permanently.
The Costa Rica international struggled to make inroads at Emirates Stadium this season and spent much of the season watching on from the sidelines.
At Villarreal, however, his luck has changed and he already has two starts to his name, one in the Copa Del Rey before making his La Liga debut at the weekend.
Gaining first-team experience is key for Campbell’s development and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will be delighted that his striker will have the opportunity to play in Europe.
The Spanish outfit will be one of the main contenders for the trophy after proving themselves to be one of the toughest opponents in La Liga, losing just once in 20 games in all competitions.
They face Austrian side Salzburg in the last-32 knockout stage, an opponent who navigated themselves through a tough group containing Scottish champions Celtic.
Campbell has previous top European experience while on loan at Olympiakos, scoring a long-range effort against Manchester United in last season’s Champions League knockout encounter.
