John Carver may have pulled off a mini-masterstroke with comments over Remy Cabella, as reported by ESPN.
The Newcastle boss suggested the Frenchman needed to show more respect towards teammates after his reaction to being subbed off during the 1-1 draw against Stoke over the weekend.
“It's great to see someone react to being taken off the pitch - All I said to Remy, who threw his bottle on the floor, was: 'Don't be disrespectful to the guy who's going on,” said Carver.
Cabella threw down a water bottle as he was taken off, which left Carver suggesting that he needed to show respect to the player coming on because it could be him coming off of the bench in the future.
Carver has been clever with the comments because he’s addressed a slight weakness in Cabella, which will help to curb him and make him a better all-round professional.
The comments also suggest that Carver won’t be afraid to drop Cabella to the bench in the future if he has to.
That will keep him on his toes and keep him motivated over the rest of the season to make sure he doesn’t find himself in that position.
The comments should also improve Cabella’s sense of team spirit. If respect for each other grows in the Newcastle squad, that improves unity and a feeling of togetherness will develop, which should in turn make Newcastle a more difficult team to get the better of.
