Gervinho may be in the midst of a fine season with AS Roma and a newly-crowned Africa Cup of Nations winner with Ivory Coast but that has not stopped the former Arsenal attacker from attracting his fair share of guffaws over the weekend.
This time around, however, it was not the 27-year-old’s penchant for missing open goals or his rather unfortunate hairstyle that was the target of mirth, but instead a bizarre moment from the coverage if Ivory Coast’s AFCON final clash with Ghana.
Already substituted and with the game heading to penalties, a handy bit of editing from those behind the scenes of the live broadcast allowed Gervinho to exhibit his skill as a magician.
The incident, which has seen some dub the former Gunners flop as “Magic Gervinho”, brings to mind another, slightly similar, moment of television gold involving Rafa Benitez.
Occurring during a previous Merseyside derby when the Spaniard was at the Liverpool helm, Benitez takes time out from giving tactical instructions to his players to seemingly usher Sky Sports’ on-screen graphic of his name into the broadcast.
The former Reds manager certainly worked wonders during his time at Anfield, with a Champions League title the undoubted high point, but while Gervinho failed to win any silverware at the Emirates it remains to be seen as to who is the more ‘magical’ of the pair – who would you pick?
