Tottenham youngster warns new signing Alli may not play for first team next season

Tottenham youngster Milos Veljkovic has warned new signing Dele Alli walking straight into the first team will be difficult.

On loan Tottenham youngster Milos Veljkovic has warned against expectations for Dele Alli's first season.

The teenager signed on transfer deadline day from MK Dons, only to be loaned straight back to the League One side for the rest of the season.

There are big hopes for the teenager, who has cost the club £5 million, but 19-year-old Veljkovic has suggested the player one year his junior may not make an initial impact in the Premier League next season.

He told The Mail: "I don't know too much about Alli, but I think it'll be the same for him as me.

"Maybe he will play for the U21's, and then train with the first team and if he's good enough he could make the bench. It'll be step-by-step. Maybe he could go on loan, which was the right step for me.

The manager said to me in the summer that he wanted me to go to America with them, so I went and played quite a bit. But when the season started, in my position there is quite a few players. I gave 100 percent but it was difficult."

Veljkovic is on his second loan of the season, currently with Charlton Athletic after a spell with Middlesbrough.

Analysing his comments

Veljkovic is not saying Alli will not get a chance, in fact the very opposite. The 18-year-old will get chances especially in pre-season to show what he can do.

The emergence on Ryan Mason and continued progression of Nabil Bentaleb into the first team this season has emphasised Mauricio Pochettino's faith in youngsters.

All Veljkovic is saying, based on his first-hand experience, is that Alli should not take anything for granted and expectation should not be too high for his initial season.
