The Feyenoord midfielder is considered one of the brightest prospects in European football, and his impressive performances in last season’s Eredivisie saw him linked with Manchester United.
As per the Mirror, United’s interest has been long-standing, but was ramped up in the summer after Louis van Gaal took charge. Van Gaal took the 23-year-old to the World Cup in 2014, and, although he utilised his talents rarely, the veteran manager is a big fan of the talented youngster.
However, Clasie remained with Feyenoord over the summer, and past the January transfer window, with a contract that runs until 2018. Although there are a few more years on his deal, there is no doubt that he will likely leave the Netherlands before that time, and Southampton has also been linked with his services.
Having attempted to sign Feyenoord teammate Tonny Vilhena during the January transfer window, it is expected that the Saints will make a move for him again in the summer. As per the Daily Mail, the South Coast club were close to a £5 million deal for Vilhena, but missed out late on transfer deadline day. A summer transfer is expected, and Saints head coach Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Clasie is on his transfer list as well.
Speaking to Dutch media outlet Voetbal International, Koeman said of his kinsman: “I'm fond of him. He is on our list.”
Koeman added some thoughts on Vilhena as well, once again reaffirming his fondness for the youngster. “I had tried with Tonny [Vilhena]. I know him well and I know what he can do. In addition, we have no left-footed midfielders in our selection, a type like him we could use.”
