Report: Southampton join race to sign Andre-Pierre Gignac on free transfer

Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac.

According to the Daily Mirror, Southampton have entered the race to sign Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac on a free transfer at the end of this season.

The Saints racked up another win this weekend, defeating QPR 1-0 at Loftus Road to maintain their position in the top four of the Premier League table.

Manager Ronald Koeman strengthened in January with the additions of Eljero Elia and Filip Djuricic, but must now wait until the end of the season for further additions.

Adding another striker may be on Koeman's transfer wishlist, with Graziano Pelle needing some support in the final third of the attack.

The Mirror believe that Southampton have joined the race to sign French international striker Gignac, who has hit 16 goals for Marseille this season.

Yet with his contract expiring at the end of the season, Gignac, 29, is available on a free transfer in July, with the Mirror also reporting that Everton and West Ham are monitoring his situation.

With 56 goals in the last two-and-a-half seasons, Gignac has been nothing short of a goal machine for the Ligue 1 side, making it unsurprising that Premier League clubs are tracking him.

Gignac represents a bargain, and Southampton will be hoping that it's they who win the battle for his signature with his contract drawing ever closer to its expiration.
