Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has suggested the way Tottenham Hotspur smothered his side in attack was difficult to deal with.
Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker told the Arsenal website about the aspect of Tottenham Hotspur’s performance he found most difficult over the weekend.
Tottenham won the North London derby 2-1 thanks to a brace from Harry Kane and the German has suggested the way Spurs pressed his side placed the Gunners back four under pressure.
“They were always at us - and we couldn’t get the ball so quickly in our half. We couldn’t make sure that we get good counter-attacks and good breaks to help,” said Mertesacker.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino needs to box up all of the things his team did effectively against the Gunners and take them forward into the next game against Liverpool.
It will be interesting to see how Spurs approach the game against Liverpool, because the Anfield crowd will be encouraging the Reds to take a similar approach to the one Tottenham showed against Arsenal.
If Spurs can start the game against Liverpool quickly, there’s no reason why they can’t gain an early advantage, build on it and then put together another very good performance.
It’s important for Tottenham’s attack to make the most of the momentum they have created for themselves while the defence has to be resilient in the face of intense pressure.
The challenge for Tottenham comes if they can’t impose themselves against Liverpool and if they find themselves chasing the game.
However, if they make it through that challenge with a win, they would have shown to impressive sides to their game in their last two matches.
