James McCarthy has given a positive reaction to the Liverpool Echo after returning to the Everton side for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool.
The midfielder completed the full 90 minutes on his comeback from a problem he picked up against Newcastle last year and was positive although Everton only managed a point against the Reds.
“That’s me back now and it was good to be back out, especially in front of a full house,” he said.
“It was just good to be back out there. It has been quite frustrating campaign for myself and the team - There have been a few changes to the way I do things.”
McCarthy offers a feisty presence, which arguably only he can provide, and it’s important for Roberto Martinez to have that back and available in his team.
He gets stuck in and breaks up the play effectively, which is important because it disrupts the momentum and pressure coming from the opposition.
The important thing is how the team now monitors the way he reacts this week and against Chelsea if he’s elected to play.
The fact he featured for the full 90 minutes against Liverpool means the club deserves a pat on the back for not throwing him into the team before he was fully ready to return.
If there are any signs of a slight problem or any sort of fatigue, the club need to manage that effectively and protect him if the manager feels it’s justified.
Keeping him fit for the rest of the campaign should help the Toffees finish as high as possible.
